I’m one year old

Hard to believe, but it was a year ago today I started this little blog.  Who knew I had a year’s worth of stuff to say?

This isn’t going to be a long one, but I have a few people to thank for this blog still being here a year later.

First, Monica Kuebler.  She published Vanishing Hope and she was the first one to urge me to develop some sort of web presence.  She also told me not to worry about posting about “writing stuff” all the time.  So if you want to blame someone for the shit stories and the vasectomy stories, etc…blame Monica.  She started it.

Next, a collective thank you to Ann Douglas, Mary McIntyre and Allyson Latta.  During last year’s Ontario Writers’ Conference, Ann gave a talk on Shameless Self-Promotion and it made me realize I could likely consider this blogging thing.  She also pushed me to Twitter and Facebook.  Mary then, on the same day, introduced me to WordPress and correctly read my wild-eyed look of fear and calmed me down and explained in simple language that even moron like me could learn it.  She used much nicer language than that.  Finally Allyson, in meeting me for the first time, was an enthusiastic supporter and nodded her head in all the right places.  They all encouraged me to write that first blog a year ago.

Next, I want to thank everyone that stopped by to read my musings over the past year.  If someone had told me a year ago that I’d have had almost 38K hits to this blog, I would have laughed.  I likely would have been delighted if, a year later, I had a couple thousand hits.

I’d also like to thank all those that have supported me in my “writerly” ambitions over the last year, including Gavy Swan, Dan Mansfield, Elizabeth Young, Deepam Wadds and Noelle Bickle from the Writers’ Community of Simcoe County, all the folks from the WCDR, including James Dewar, Sue Reynolds, M-E Girard, Dale Long, and a list of others too long to name, as well as Colum McKnight and Jason Darrick from Dreadful Tales, two of my first fans and good friends, and Ian Rogers, my fellow BE peer, as well as Ed Kurtz of Redrum and Abattoir fame who was crazy enough to give me a writing gig.

To Cara Michaels, who came up with a crazy idea to write 500 words a day and it’s taken over my mornings, as well as a page on this blog.

To all the students in my Creative Writing classes, many of which I consider friends now. Especially Pat Flewwelling, my constant supporter.

Finally, I want to thank my long suffering family, the Boy, the Girl and the Wife so frequently mentioned and lampooned on this site.  Hunter, Madison and Karen, thank you for your patience, your encouragement and for not killing me for some of the stuff I’ve written.

And an extra-special thank you to Karen.  I always know when she’s reading one of my so-called “funny” blogs because I’ll hear an occasional whoop of laughter and a whack as she pounds the desk.  Kind of makes it all worth it.

I know I’ve forgotten a lot of people along the way, and forgive me and remind me if I’ve missed you. No slight intended.

  1. Honey, I’m so glad you did this. I love the blogs, all of them, but I truly love reading the family stuff, it brings back such great memories and you do describe them exactly how they happened. Love it, love you.

    The Wife

    • Yeah, but the award would be to list your favourite 50 blogs that have been online longer than five years and tell twenty secrets about yourself.

      Or something like that.

  2. Congratulations, Tobin! So glad to hear I was enthusiastic and nodded in all the right places. Hmm, it’s not like me not to be talking (ask anyone). Well, if only it were always that easy to encourage someone to do something as BIG as starting a blog — and keeping it up for a whole year. Seriously, that is amazing. I’ve enjoyed your posts and I hope you keep writing for your loyal following. Happy first anniversary. If I’d known you were coming I’d have baked a cake. Since I didn’t, I’ll just write you one:

    CAKE.

    • Honestly Annie, I say this a lot, but man, I wish I could write like you. You’re utterly fearless. I love your stuff, and it’s part of what keeps me going. I look at us as the Brian Wilson/Lennon & McCartney friendly rivalry. You do something great, so I try and beat it.

But I don’t want to end up in bed for a year, or playing piano in a big sandbox. That’s just weird.

  3. I was just catching up on reading your blog and almost missed my name being mentioned! 😀 I feel so special. Congrats on the One Year. Blogging for a whole year…that’s something to feel proud about. Blogging’s hard. It’s not always having something to say (’cause my loud mouth always has something to ramble about), but it takes work not to sound…dumb. You’re good at that, not sounding dumb. So, way to go! 😀

    • Oh trust me, I can sound dumb. You just haven’t been around me enough to hear it yet. Just wait until July when we’re trapped in a room for three days, on a sugar high and sleep-deprived. THEN you’ll hear me sound dumb.

  4. Seriously? It’s only been a year? Your blog reads like it’s been around longer. Not as in state and boring, but as in polished and witty. Well as witty as potty humour can get 😉
Congrats! I hope you plan on keeping us in stitches for years to come.

    • Yeah, I probably sound like that annoying house guest that won’t leave. You know, everyone else has left, you’ve put the kids to bed, brushed your teeth and gotten into your pyjamas, and I’m still there, hinting that I’d love another coffee…

  5. Congratulations Tobin! I may not comment a lot on your posts but I read each and every one of them. You have made me smile, cry, reminisce, and laugh so hard I nearly pee my pants! Keep writing! Love ya!

  6. Happy 1-Year Anniversary, Tobin! I’ve only just started to read your blog since you signed up for the sugar-high & sleep deprived weekend in the Muskoka’s… so far, every post that I have read, has had some kind of noise accompaniment… whether it be a laugh (Seedless Grapes, vasectomy), grunt/swear words (chickie-poo trying to sell her book at the expense of your aunt’s passing) or a proud sigh (Literally illiterate, posted on my birthday)! You are doing a wonderful job… you deserve CAKE! 🙂

  7. Geez, I try to follow your blogs, but last week was nuts and this week – well, week from hell. But hey, enough about me. Congrats. Wanna share some tips on how to move up from having a high one-day viewer count of 32? And don’t say, “Whitney Houston”!
